Nestled in the vibrant town of Montero, Bolivia, Hogar Sagrado Corazón stands as a beacon of hope and sanctuary for young girls in need. This orphanage, operated by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SSCJ), is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for abandoned and impoverished children, ensuring they receive the care, education, and love they deserve.
A Home Filled with Heart
Hogar Sagrado Corazón, translated to “Sacred Heart Home,” is more than just a shelter; it is a family. The home caters to girls who have faced challenging circumstances, offering them a safe place to grow, learn, and thrive. The Sisters, along with dedicated lay volunteers, work tirelessly to create a supportive community where every child feels valued and loved.
The Salesian Lay Missioners’ Role
Salesian Lay Missioners (SLMs) play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the hogar. SLMs commit a year or more of their lives to live and work alongside the Sisters. Their responsibilities are diverse, ranging from teaching and tutoring to organizing recreational activities and providing emotional support to the girls.
Daily Life at the Hogar
Life at Hogar Sagrado Corazon is structured yet filled with joy and learning. The day begins early, with the girls participating in morning routines, including prayer and breakfast. Education is a priority, and the girls attend local schools where they are encouraged to excel academically. After school, the hogar offers a variety of programs, including homework help, arts and crafts, and sports.
The SLMs are integral in facilitating these activities. One volunteer described her routine: “I spend the morning in the playroom, or jugueteria (toy shop), with the youngest kids. In the afternoon and evening, I open a library for the girls to do homework and read. I also walk the kindergarten kids to and from school in the afternoon.”
Challenges and Triumphs
Life at the hogar is not without its challenges. The children come from difficult backgrounds and often require significant emotional and psychological support. The physical environment also presents hurdles, as resources can be limited. However, the resilience of the girls and the unwavering dedication of the Sisters and volunteers create a transformative atmosphere.
A Place of Growth and Love
Despite the obstacles, Hogar Sagrado Corazon remains a place of incredible growth and love. The girls learn not only academic skills but also life skills that prepare them for a brighter future. They form lasting bonds with each other and with the volunteers who come to serve them.
The impact of the hogar extends beyond the girls it directly serves. The surrounding community benefits from the presence of the hogar, which promotes values of kindness, education, and social responsibility.
Looking Ahead
The future of Hogar Sagrado Corazón is promising, with plans to continue expand and adapt its programs to meet the ever-changing needs of the youth it serves. The continued support of Salesian Lay Missioners and generous donors around the world is essential to sustaining this vital work for the youth of Montero.
As the Sisters and SLMs continue their mission, Hogar Sagrado Corazón will remain a cornerstone of hope and transformation in Montero, Bolivia, demonstrating the profound difference that love, dedication, and faith can make in the lives of vulnerable youth.
