On November 15, 2024, former Salesian Lay Missioner (SLM) and current International Programs Associate, Barbara Ekanga, represented the organization at the World Day of the Poor event held in New York City. Hosted by Catholic Relief Services, Caritas Internationalis, and Fordham University’s IPED program and held at the Church Center for the United Nations, the event gathered leaders and organizations dedicated to addressing global poverty, focusing on pressing issues such as food security, climate change, and sustainable development.
Ekanga’s participation emphasized the SLMs’ dedication to serving vulnerable populations worldwide. With her experience as a former lay missioner and now as an International Programs Associate, Ekanga contributed insights on the critical role of education, vocational training, and social services in empowering marginalized youth and families. Her involvement reinforced the organization’s commitment to creating lasting solutions that help lift communities out of poverty.
The event featured presentations, including Fordham University’s Pope Francis Global Poverty Index, and a panel discussion on global poverty trends. Participants also had the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the United Nations, learning more about the organization’s efforts to address poverty and related global challenges.
The Salesians and Salesian Lay Missioners continue to play a vital role in global poverty alleviation, operating in over 130 countries to provide crucial services and opportunities for the most disadvantaged. The organization’s active involvement in the World Day of the Poor event further demonstrates its mission to advocate for and support those in need.
