Mamae Margarida is an all girl orphanage and primary school/activity center. Currently there are 26 girls from ages 2-18 yrs. old. The girls are considered to be at-risk and have come to the home for a better and nurturing environment. The majority of the girls are teenagers with just a few small children on-hand. The primary school/activity center is used for the girls at the educational level and is also open to girls in the neighborhood.
The Casa’s capacity can house about 25 girls right now but the need is greater and they are hoping to expand.

- There are psychologists, social workers, cooks, teachers, drivers and monitors. The monitors are former residents from the house who have turned 18 and are now working with the Sisters.
The volunteers’ duties would include monitoring, helping with homework, tutoring or teaching English and to be a stable presence in their lives and good role model. The volunteer would have the opportunity for morning and evening prayer with the Sisters. Much of the work here is a work of “presence” with the girls: to be someone that they can look to for support and help.
