In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus declares that His disciples are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Jesus explains that the mission of His disciples is to let their light shine before others, so that others may see their good works and give glory to God. I believe that Jesus calls me also to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. I believe that I am called to be a sharer in this mission – to let my light shine, so that through my actions, people can see the truth about, love of, and hope in Jesus Christ. I believe that people ought to be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve by virtue of their being rational, human persons created in the image and likeness of God. I believe that I am called to serve others with patience, compassion, and love. I hope through small acts of kindness and prayer, I can help others to find comfort, happiness, and peace in Jesus Christ. Because of my belief in Jesus Christ, I have the strength to continue to learn and to be hopeful, despite the constant violations against life and the dignity of the human person ever present in our world today. My faith gives me hope – a hope informed by the truth of Who Jesus Christ is and what His message of joy, love, and life means for all people. I am serving as a Salesian Lay Missioner so that I can help others also to have this same hope. By serving others and God during this year of mission, I hope to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world that God calls us all to be.
